Choosing your Electronic Medical Record (EMR) – Part 1

Choosing the right EMR system for your medical practice is dependent on a variety of factors and can be considered a daunting task. Some of the variables include office size, goals of the practice, technology capabilities, local support, and cost to name a few. With so many options to choose from, the practice manager and providers can easily feel overwhelmed.

Although there is no “perfect” EMR out there, a practice can find great benefit in successfully implementing a solution to meet specific needs. Some of the benefits include:

  • Advance patient care
  • Increase staff productivity
  • Improve practice moral
  • Ease of access to patient records
  • Elimination of transcription costs
  • Faster processing of patient records
  • Reduce prescription errors
  • Meeting patient needs at lower costs

In this series of blogs, I’ll be posting some critical areas that each practice must consider when choosing their own EMR vendor. There is much that could be mentioned to begin this series, but I begin where Thinsolutions has always shown tremendous value:  local, professional support.

In an interview with Dr. Perkins of the Institute for Athletic Medicine, he stated, ““Ninety percent of our previous system’s problems could be fixed via the Internet, but the remaining 10 percent would cause us to shut down for hours or days. From a patient care perspective, any interruption in service compromises our ability to provide the best care to our patients, as critical patient information such as allergies or prescription records would be unavailable. gloStream’s local technology partners set it apart from other EMR software on the market, providing real value to physician practices’ requirements for uninterrupted patient care and service” (2010, gloStream).

A local support team can make all the difference. Even before goals and objectives for the practice are fully considered, the support of the practice must come first. Thinsolutions has been supporting practices for several years with service offerings such as Managed Services, IT Consulting, Back up/Disaster Recovery, Cloud Services, Website Design and more. Be sure the solutions that you consider have both remote and local support to keep your practice running and secure.
